ABOUT RWANDA PEACE BASKET
Agaseke, is a beautiful Rwandan handcrafted basket that has been a part of the country’s culture for centuries. The baskets are woven from natural raw materials like sisal fibres, sweet grass, banana leaves and raffia.
Rwandan women are taught how to weave the baskets from their mothers and grandmothers, carrying on a tradition that has been passed down from one generation to another.
Historically, weaving was passed down from mother to daughter, generation to generation, as a rite of passage marking the transition into womanhood and symbolizing a mother’s care for her children and her country. However, after the 1994 genocide, this age-old tradition took on a new and powerful meaning in Rwanda.
These determined women decided to use traditional agaseke baskets as a symbol of Rwanda’s newfound peace, and the baskets’ iconic zigzag patterns came to represent the image of two women holding hands—embracing reconciliation, unity, and hope for the future of Rwanda.
“[It’s] really amazing to see how a small piece of work, how culture can restore values in people, how healing comes through a small basket,” says Janet Nkubana, co-founder of Gahaya Links.
KNITTING THE LANDSCAPE
Agaseke, is a beautiful Rwandan handcrafted basket that has been a part of the country’s culture for centuries and also became a symbol of peace. ‘PROJECT NAME’ inspired by Agasake in terms of spreading the area, knitting the landscape and repetition.
The design tells a story both inside and on the face of the buildings. The experience of the design gives possibility of strolls on ramps, which are following the topography, to maximize the pleasure of integrating with the nature.
The design cherishes both interior and exterior scenes through paths: which on the interior circulation brings people to the patios easily; and on the exterior providing access to the down levels where the accomodation, meditation garden and warehouse from the main clinic
MATERIAL SELECTION
By balancing natural, local materials with careful selection of importedmaterials and equipment, the Rwandan building designer can achieve a good balance between durability and low environmental impact with more obvious financial and environmental advantage than in many other countries.
DESIGN
Meditation garden creates fresh, cozy and also private time for the users with using local eucalyptus and bamboo trees from the area. Furthermore taking advantage of sloppy area via terracing made crowded places communicate with each other and interface effortlessly. Trying to balance natural, local materials with careful selection of imported materials and equipment, helped our design to achieve a good balance between durability and low environmental impact with more obvious financial and environmental advantage. Using fried brick for the walls, bamboo for covering material of patios, eucalyptus tree for wooden beams of the roof and also natural ventilation, minimize usage of cement, steel and other manufactured materials brings sustainable and eco-friendly aspects to our design. Besides with ramps or car roads disabled people can reach every building easily without obligation to use an elevator and creating extra cost. Topography is slowly going 1 meter down in each 5 meters, the roof slope of the buildings also parallels this although collect water. In addition, this slope of the roof also supports the maximum exposure of the sun’s rays from both angles to the terrain in the equator with photovoltaic panels.
